What is required of me to get a Dedicated Hunters Certificate, as required for all of our rifle license & renewal applications? What is required of me to get a Dedicated Hunters Certificate, as required for all of our rifle license & renewal applications?

Unfortunately the Firearms Amendment Act has not been promulgated yet. The office of the Minister indicated that it should be promulgated after the June 2011 Parliamentary Recess and that we can expect that Section 16A will take effect therefore, during August/September this year.  Once this happens, a Professional Hunter belonging to PHASA, as an accredit association, will be allowed to own more than four firearms as "tools of his trade".

Currently, however, professional hunters have two options:

1)  To register his/her business with SAPS, applying for accreditation as a business and then transfer the firearms into the name of his/her company for business purposes;
2)  Obtain dedicated hunter status from an accredited local hunting association (SAHGCA, Any CHASA association or SA Wingshooters) in order to apply for the possession of more than four firearms, as a dedicated hunter (not for business use).

We've been waiting for 4 years now for the Amendment Act (Section 16A) to come into effect and can only hold thumbs that it will indeed happen later in 2011!
