Conditional Registration of PHASA members as tourist guides
Unit standards for some guiding categories have not been compiled or processed for SAQA approval yet. This problem contributes to illegal guiding and indeed these sectors cannot be held accountable for not complying with the Tourism 2nd Amendment Act No: 70, 2000 when there are no frameworks in place. It is for this reason that interim measures were put in place.
PHASA and Dr Raputsoe, Director: Tourism Sector Regulation Tourist Guiding and Quality Assurance, have entered into a special agreement for PH’s who are members of PHASA, to register as tourist guides in order to transport their clients to and from their hunts
In order to apply for registration, submit the following to the designated person in the Province:
** The prescribed registration form and fee
** Four colour photographs
** Proof of relevant/highest qualification
** Certified copies of:
- First Aid Certificate (if PHASA curriculum includes this, a separate certificate isn't
necessary)
- Language Certificate/s
- Copy of ID
- Competence certificate
** In the case of PHASA members, the application is to be accompanied by the
membership letter.
1. The conditional registration would be valid for two years only from the date of registration, upon which the guide would have completed required unit standards. All applicants will complete 2 prescribed unit standards within a period of 2 years form the date of registration;
2. Every registered member will pay a R 240,00 application fee for the applicable registration period (2 years) at the office of the Provincial Registrar in the province of registration. The renewal of registration is every two years;
3. All applicants will be expected to familiarize themselves with the tourist guides Code of Conduct and Practice and must be adhered to at all times. Qualifying applicants will sign the prescribed Tourist Guide Code of Conduct Declaration;
4. PHASA will notify DEAT of any undesired practice by its registered members and appropriate intervention will be undertaken to redress the problem including withdrawal or registration.
