Competency Renewals - Commencement of certain Provisions of the FCA
Government Gazette 33871 dated 17th December 2010, Proclamation No 77, 2010 COMMENCEMENT OF CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF THE FIREARMS CONTROL AMENDMENT ACT, 2006 (ACT NO. 28 OF 2006)
Specifically section 10 and insertion of 10a.
SAGA and other organizations have been receiving many complaints about renewal of competency certificates and so to clarify the current situation we are sending the following information.
In terms of the abovementioned Government Gazette, competency certificates were automatically extended if you had a valid competency certificate as at the 10th January 2011,they will be valid for the period of your longest licence. This means if you have a handgun and a long gun, your competency was extended from 5 years to 10 years, because all long gun licences (other than for self-defence) are valid for 10 years.
The SAPS at many police stations seem to be unaware of this automatic extension, and are insisting on the renewal of competency certificates after 5 years. If your competency was valid as at the 10th January 2011, this is incorrect. Please refer the SAPS to the abovementioned Government Gazette and if you are asked to fill in any affidavits or give any form of written explanation as to alleged non-compliance, please contact the SAGA office immediately.
The Gazette is on our website if required.
